Goldador History

The Goldador has first developed over a decade ago. The Labrador Retriever and the Golden Retriever were crossed to produce a sensitive, tolerant working dog. This proved to be a success, with organizations that train guide and assistance dogs using Goldadors as their primary dog of choice. The Goldador is not a popular breed yet and there are no breed clubs or official standards.

Goldador Size

Goldador is one of the few breeds with an accurate size. They are usually 22-24 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh 60-80 pounds.

Goldador Personality

The Goldador is affectionate and loyal, which makes him an excellent watchdog. He’s too friendly to be an effective guard dog, but he’ll love your kids and get along with other animals.

They are intelligent and easy to train. They respond best to positive reinforcement techniques. This dog can do a lot of things independently, but he prefers to have human guidance and enjoys keeping them company! He’s really sweet and loves people. If you decide to get him as a pet, don’t leave him in your backyard all-day

Goldador puppies need to be introduced to a lot of different people, sights, sounds, and experiences when they are young. This helps them grow up into well-rounded pups.

Children and Pet Compatibility

Goldador Retrievers are an ideal family companion and they’re always extremely friendly and loving towards children.

Goldador puppies grow up to be social and easy-going, loving everyone and just being friendly in general. They love other dogs & pets and need a lot of attention when around smaller children.

Always teach children how to properly approach and touch dogs. Make sure a child is never left alone with a dog no matter how friendly it appears. Children shouldn’t approach sleeping animals or try to take their food. They should never be left alone with any animal, regardless of the creature’s temperament, to avoid the chance of harm occurring.

Coat Color

A Goldador is similar to a Labrador Retriever and should have the same double coat. It also has a short, thick, straight topcoat and soft, dense undercoat (some with a slight wave down the back). Generally, Goldador’s will have a coat color that ranges from yellow to gold and to reddish gold. However, this may vary as the Goldador is a mix of a Lab & a Golden Retriever parent.

Grooming

Be sure to brush your Goldador every day with a rubber curry brush. This removes any potential dead hair and can help you keep shedding under control. If there’s a lot of shedding, giving them a bath more than once or twice a week is recommended.

They can be prone to ear infections. Check and clean their ears weekly, plus dental hygiene and nail care. Brush their teeth at least two or three times a week to keep tartar away.

Trim your dog’s nails once or twice a month, as needed. If their nails click on the floor when they walk, they’re too long. Keeping them short will look after your dog’s feet and means he won’t scratch you when he jumps up for a pat.

Make grooming a positive experience with lots of praise, and you’ll lay the groundwork for vet exams when your pet is older.

Trainability

If you’re just starting out with dog ownership, a Goldador may be the perfect choice for you. They have a gentle, patient personality without any inclination to try and dominate an insecure owner.

Although getting your puppy comfortable with contact with other dogs is important, this process can be pretty painless given the fact that he or she is a mix.

It’s important to start training your dog early so you don’t have as much hard work to do or anxiety. Teaching them to obey and be led responsibly from eight weeks of age will set them up for success later on. Effusive praise is enough reward for this people-centric pup. Younger Goldadors are more sensitive to their surroundings, as they can be easily distracted away. But with lots of patience and love, there is a lot to enjoy! So, they might need a little reward in the form of treats for following the owner’s call or whistle. They will definitely do anything if it means getting something tasty.

Food & Diet

The Goldador will eat about three cups of food a day. It is important that you feed him a high-quality kibble, and always pick the best quality food within your budget. Feeding him high-quality kibbles can help maintain his healthy diet while providing key nutrients to help him grow up strong. Give him a good diet so that he can be both healthy and happy.

If you have a Goldador, make sure to give it the right food. Kibble designed for large breeds will keep the calcium and phosphorus levels under control, which is important for their rapid bone growth.

The most common joint condition for Labradors is hip and elbow dysplasia. Choosing appropriate dog food will help in reducing the chances of this occurring in your Labradors. You can search from a plethora of dog food brands created specifically for Labs, or if you like Golden Retrievers, there are also brands that cater to them as well!

Goldador Health Issues

Goldador dogs are prone to certain conditions. Some Goldadors will get these diseases, but not all of them will. It’s important to be aware of the potential health risks when deciding whether or not you want a Goldador mix in your life. The most common health condition are:

  • Hip Dysplasia
  • Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)Elbow Dysplasia
  • Cataracts
  • Diabetes

Care

A Goldador will do best in a house with a yard, but if you don’t have one an apartment or condo is also possible. A walk or jog each day will make him happy too.

They need to get at least 30 minutes of exercise per day. If you’re interested in competing with your Goldador in dog sports, they can make formidable competitors in agility or flyball.

Mental stimulation is important as well. Teach your dog to fetch the paper or your slippers, train him on obedience regularly, and make his mind work from time to time with an interactive dog toy. You need to use positive reinforcement techniques such as praise and treats if you want to train him. His sensitive and harsh corrections will definitely damage his confidence.
