Goldador Dogs are often said to be the best of both parent breeds- a mix of tirelessly loyal and loving Golden Retrievers combined with the intelligence and stamina of Labradors Retrievers.

They make for fantastic family members- they’re great with kids and social with other pets, as well as a valuable guide, service, and bomb detection dogs. Affectionate & friendly, they can even make for good companions for novice pet parents. However, they need a lot of exercise and attention. Goldador History

The Goldador has first developed over a decade ago. The Labrador Retriever and the Golden Retriever were crossed to produce a sensitive, tolerant working dog. This proved to be a success, with organizations that train guide and assistance dogs using Goldadors as their primary dog of choice. The Goldador is not a popular breed yet and there are no breed clubs or official standards.

Goldador Size

Goldador is one of the few breeds with an accurate size. They are usually 22-24 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh 60-80 pounds.

Goldador Personality

The Goldador is affectionate and loyal, which makes him an excellent watchdog. He’s too friendly to be an effective guard dog, but he’ll love your kids and get along with other animals.

They are intelligent and easy to train. They respond best to positive reinforcement techniques. This dog can do a lot of things independently, but he prefers to have human guidance and enjoys keeping them company! He’s really sweet and loves people. Always teach children how to properly approach and touch dogs. Make sure a child is never left alone with a dog no matter how friendly it appears. Coat Color

A Goldador is similar to a Labrador Retriever and should have the same double coat. It also has a short, thick, straight topcoat and soft, dense undercoat (some with a slight wave down the back). Generally, Goldador’s will have a coat color that ranges from yellow to gold and to reddish gold. However, this may vary as the Goldador is a mix of a Lab & a Golden Retriever parent.

Grooming

Be sure to brush your Goldador every day with a rubber curry brush. This removes any potential dead hair and can help you keep shedding under control. If there’s a lot of shedding, giving them a bath more than once or twice a week is recommended.

They can be prone to ear infections. Check and clean their ears weekly, plus dental hygiene and nail care. Brush their teeth at least two or three times a week to keep tartar away.

Trim your dog’s nails once or twice a month, as needed. If their nails click on the floor when they walk, they’re too long. Keeping them short will look after your dog’s feet and means he won’t scratch you when he jumps up for a pat.

Make grooming a positive experience with lots of praise, and you’ll lay the groundwork for vet exams when your pet is older.

Trainability

If you’re just starting out with dog ownership, a Goldador may be the perfect choice for you. They have a gentle, patient personality without any inclination to try and dominate an insecure owner.

The Goldador will eat about three cups of food a day. It is important that you feed him a high-quality kibble, and always pick the best quality food within your budget. Feeding him high-quality kibbles can help maintain his healthy diet while providing key nutrients to help him grow up strong. Give him a good diet so that he can be both healthy and happy.

The most common joint condition for Labradors is hip and elbow dysplasia. Choosing appropriate dog food will help in reducing the chances of this occurring in your Labradors. Mental stimulation is important as well. Teach your dog to fetch the paper or your slippers, train him on obedience regularly, and make his mind work from time to time with an interactive dog toy.
