The Shepsky breed originated in the late 1990s when North American breeders mixed German Shepherd and Siberian Husky.

Shepskies are a new breed of designer dog, bred by mixing the two parent breeds. Demand has been growing for these cross-bred pups and as such, breeders have continued to produce them.

Though the Shepsky breed got its start as a designer breed, many now find themselves in shelters or with rescue groups. Consider adoption if you’re interested in this dog.

You can check your local shelters, ask the Shepsky rescues, or talk to German Shepherd and Siberian Husky rescues as they sometimes re-home mixed breed dogs.

The Shepsky is recognized by the Dog Registry of America Inc. and The American Canine Hybrid Club.

Shepsky Size

As the Shepsky is a new breed, there are few set standards when it comes to size. That said, this mix of German Shepherd and Siberian Huskies parents usually produces medium to large dogs. Most Shepsky are on the lower end of the scale with weight ranging from 45-88 pounds and height from 20-25 inches at the shoulder.

Many Shepsky lovers find their dogs to be an active and playful breed. They are medium size, full of energy and have a long line of working parents. This is why they often need jobs, no matter how small or large the job needs to be.

Shepskies are pack dogs and need a leader to show them what to do. They will try testing the limits of your leadership and seek to take control if you hesitate for too long. When this happens, don’t let them take the lead. Stay focused and remember that you’re leading. Stick to the rules and don’t budge regardless of their pushiness.

It can help to establish your leadership role when you make the effort to train your Shepsky. They’ll view you as the keeper of all valuable resources food, treats, toys, and other canine assets.

One thing Shepskies aren’t great at is staying in the same place for a long time without going out. Without the companionship, exercise, and mental stimulation they need, they can get bored, frustrated, and become less fun.

If your dog doesn’t get enough exercise or attention, it might lash out. Dogs who are under-exercised or ignored by their family might express pent-up energy in ways you don’t like, such as howling and chewing.

Shepsky’s Health Issues

The Shepsky share some similarities with other breeds such as the German Shepherd and Siberian Husky. In general, they are healthy but some may be prone to a few health conditions. You should maintain good care in order to keep them this way and bless with long, happy lives.

  • Patellar Luxation
  • Hip Dysplasia
  • Progressive Retinal Atrophy
  • Epile
  • digestive problems
  • blood disorders
  • bloat
  • epilepsy
  • eczema
  • dwarfism

Care

It’s important to find a vet who will work with you to maintain your Shepsky’s level of health. A regular veterinary checkup is necessary to detect any future health concerns, so keep up with them!

They are prone to weight gain, with higher energy levels than most other breeds of dogs. One hour of exercise per day is a good starting point – make sure you’re taking them for walks and to the occasional dog park.

By checking your dog’s ears for debris and pests, cleaning them as recommended by your vet, trimming their nails before they get too long–usually once or twice per month, and having your groomer take care of this monthly.

Your main concern will be maintaining your dog’s dental hygiene to prevent gum disease. Brush their teeth at least once a day as some breeds are more prone to tooth issues. Your vet can show you the right way to clean your pup’s teeth.

Coat Color And Grooming

Shepsky coats often have the coat and color of the parents, thus being a mix of German Shepherd and Siberian Husky coats. They are mostly brown, black, cream, white, red, and blue in color. Never solid, they are generally a mixture of two or more colors!

These dogs are known for their thick long hair and they’re not recommendable to people with allergies. They have a tendency of shedding quite a lot which, might need to be taken care of by investing in a RoboVac.

These puppies should be brushed a few times per week to remove loose hair. They should not be bathed too often as this will strip their coat of its natural oils. Brushing will also help distribute natural oils throughout the body and keep your pup’s coat looking healthy.

These dogs are a great choice for cold climates. Not only do they come from Russia, where it is notoriously icy, but they also have Siberian Husky ancestors.

Training

Training should be done in a positive, gentle way because development is an essential part of the dog’s character and dog training sessions need to be regular and consistent.

Gerberian Shepskies can be energetic dogs, but playing outside is important for them. It will not only help keep their bones healthy and strong, but it will also increase their immunity.

These dogs need an outlet for their energy. If they’re not getting enough exercise, they can become mischievous or overly demanding.

It’s important for children to be taught how to approach and interact with dogs so that dogs do not feel overly threatened by the presence of either. Young children and puppies should always be supervised for safety reasons. Never approach a dog while they’re eating or take their food away. Dogs must be supervised by an adult while they’re around children.

Socializing your Shepsky, especially when they’re a pup, is critical to their overall growth & development. Though introducing an adult Shepsky in a home with other pets can be difficult if the German Shepherd’s parentage nature takes over and may require more of your attention and the help of a professional trainer.
