Although it’s often said that Rottweilers are violent and dangerous, they actually became one of the most beloved breeds in the world due to their friendly temperament and protective nature. 1) That they were originally bred to be guard dogs
They have a reputation for aggression, but they weren’t bred to attack. They were bred to guard their owners and their homes, and they still do that today! The word Rottweiler translates from German to mean Butcher Dog. This is because, back in medieval times, Rotties were often used by butchers as guard dogs during meat deliveries.
2) That they are used in police and military
Rottweilers have a well-deserved reputation for being fearless and reliable. In fact, they are regularly used by police officers and by members of armed forces around the world. They’re also great at getting their paws on rare items such as drugs and bombs, which is why they have been trained to find them for many years now.
3) That Rottweilers come in both standard and miniature sizes
The rottweiler is a big dog and grows to stand between 24 and 26 inches tall at shoulder height. He can reach up to 100 pounds in weight, though most mature male rotties weigh about 80 pounds or less. Female rotties are smaller, standing about 22 inches tall and weighing about 65 pounds or less. Miniature rotties have been bred down from standard-sized parents, so they retain all of their larger counterparts’ athleticism, strength and devotion but in a much smaller package.

Unlike most dogs, rottweilers live a relatively long time. Of course, your dog’s longevity depends on how well he takes care of himself and how healthy his parents were. But if you keep your rottie in shape and make sure he eats right, chances are good that you’ll still have him around when he’s 10 years old. Give him lots of toys to gnaw on so his teeth stay strong—don’t let him chew on your shoes!
5) Rottweilers have an overall lifespan of 12–14 years
Rottweilers are a long-lived breed, with an average lifespan of 12 to 14 years. The oldest living rottweiler was 17 years and five months old when it died in 2010. This is compared to 11-13 years for larger breeds such as Labradors and golden retrievers, and 8-10 years for small breeds like Chihuahuas.
6) Rottweilers are loving family dogs
While they’re often feared for their size, most people have never met a rottweiler that showed aggression without provocation. While they can certainly be protective of children and other animals in their pack, most rotties would rather welcome new family members with tail wags than snarls. The AKC began keeping track of registrations in 1884, and since that time, these dogs have never fallen below number 5 on its rankings. They don’t bark much: When well-trained, they tend to bark only as a warning or a response to their owners’ commands. A well-trained adult Rottweiler rarely barks. Well-socialized puppies rarely bark at all.
8) The cost of owning a Rottweiler is low

These dogs don’t require constant grooming and their energetic level is relatively low. 9) Rottweilers are very intelligent, which makes them easy to train
Rottweilers are very smart and trainable. They can be trained to perform a variety of tasks, including police dog, search and rescue worker, or therapy dog. They learn quickly and respond well to positive reinforcement.
10) There are some disadvantages to having a Rottweiler
They are big dogs and need lots of exercise and mental stimulation. When not provided with enough exercise or mental stimulation, a Rottweiler can become destructive and bored, leading to undesirable behavior. They need obedience training from an early age so that they don’t develop behavioral problems later on. Also, if you have a young child in your family, you should think twice before getting a Rottweiler because of their large size.
