The poodle is a dog breed, with possible origins in Germany or France. The name poodle comes from German Pudel, which means one who plays in water. They were used as duck hunters in Germany and later as French Water dogs that retrieved water fowl shot down by hunters. They became popular with royal courts as ornamental or pet dogs because of their unique looks and intelligence. In France they became status symbols of wealth.
